JUNIOR FUN DAY OUT AT MARSH FARM FISHERIES

On 10 September, 15 juniors and 19 adults set off to take part in our annual fun day out. This year we took the juniors and their families to marsh farm fisheries, in Godalming, where we had the entire hill pond to ourselves and planned a BBQ for lunch.
The day started out dark and gloomy with a slight breeze, but at this point was dry. After a quick briefing about the fishery and the introduction of Pete Dawson, the lead coach of Godalming angling society, we were able to set up and begin!
However, it turned out to be much harder than expected.
After the first half, keep nets had to be emptied and it became apparent the usually lively hill pond had created quite a challenge, with very little being caught. Though supposedly, this had been the way for a couple of weeks.
So then, it was lunch time.
The BBQs had been lit and helpers, Michelle Mundy, Wendy Hughes, Maria Butler and Charlotte Kinloch set about cooking and serving the burgers and rather large sausages.
It is around this point though, when the weather became a little less appealing, so up went the brollies.
The weather continued to be pretty bad throughout the afternoon, and began to put a few people off. The fish also continued to play hard to get, with some people unable to catch anything much the entire day.
But despite this, it seemed to go pretty well. Everyone enjoyed themselves and had a good time.
I would like to thank Pete Dawson for helping out with the angling.
Martin Gage, for bringing the food and, Michelle Mundy, Wendy Hughes, Maria Butler & Charlotte Kinloch, for doing the BBQ.
Jess Carey for taking the photos which can be viewed on our facebook page.
Thanks to all those who participated, hope to see you all again next year.

Junior Match Round 5 - New Lake.

On a grey but slightly chilly morning, 7 juniors and 5 intermediates turned out for the last league match of the season.
There was a lot riding on the match, in the junior section only 6 points separated the top two. With the good turnout of anglers anything could happen.
From the beginning it was noticeable the matches were going to be slow. Every fish hooked needed to be netted, a lost fish could be very costly at the end.
Lee got off to a flying start in the Intermediate section, using a method feeder to catch small carp. However, it didn’t take long for his neighbour, Ryan, to start catching either.
As the junior match continued, silver fish were starting to be caught; with Rory making the most of it, catching them quite close in.
Further down the section Lucy hooked and lost a carp. Next to her, Stephen had started to catch steadily; catching silvers with an odd carp. Despite this, the fishing was still very slow for new lake standards.
Back at the intermediates Lee and Ryan were now starting to pull away from the rest. Zac was catching silvers whilst feeding a carp line, hoping for a late surge of fish nearer the end of the match. Meanwhile, Jack was quietly catching the odd fish next to him.
In the junior section, Rory was still catching silvers, and now had a small carp in his net. He was getting concerned with the sound of the odd carp being caught and lost; should he go for carp himself, or, keep going as he is?
…Tough choice.
Next to Rory was Rebecca, who was catching odd fish. Beside her, Edward had hooked and lost a carp as well.
With fish being lost, how would this pan out at the end?
Bottom of the section, Shaun had been catching a few small fish. The other Sean next to him suddenly caught a small carp making things interesting.
Were the fish starting to turn up at the end of the section?
Two thirds of the way through the match, the competition looked between Rory and Stephen, with Lucy hooking another three carp, only for them to part company after a short fight.
Shaun on the end peg now had a carp, would this be a sudden change in fortunes for him?
During this time, the Intermediates section was hotting up, with Lee and Ryan both claiming the other had more in weight.
This one was too close to call.
Stephen in the junior section had now landed another carp, and with Ten minutes to go, Lucy let out a shout for help. After a worrying battle, she was shocked to see a very sizeable fish lying in her landing net.
The end of the match was called and now all were thinking about who might take the honours. In the junior section it was close; now everyone had caught at least one carp. In the intermediates it was more a question as to it being Ryan or Lee, as they were nip and tuck most of the match.
When all were weighed in and all the fish safely back in the lake, the results were as shown below.

As the Coach I am pleased to say, this year improvements have been made by every single angler, and all should be very proud.
Many thanks to all the parents for their valuable help.
A big thank you to you all for your support throughout the season it has been much appreciated.

Junior Match Round 3 - 6th August 201I - New Lake.

On a grey but mild morning, 6 juniors & 3 intermediates turned out for this match.
As the match wore on it was noticeable that the fish were a little shy in coming forward in the intermediates area, but the juniors smaller carp were beginning to show.
With odd fish being lost right through, the anglers kept going, when in the last half hour of the match, the fish switched on, and at one point I noticed six of the nine anglers all playing fish at once.
In the junior section, league leader Rory Kinloch had a late run of carp, but would it be enough, or, had Stephen Gage done enough in the later stages after losing early fish.
With Lucy Hughes & Edward Kelly catching steadily through the match, eyes would be on them at the weigh in.
In the intermediates section Ryan Pike had caught early, but was off his box midway through to find out what was being caught.
Meanwhile newbie Jack Robinson had been catching small fish when near the end he had a couple of carp which made things interesting.
When all were weighed in and all the fish safely back in the lake the results were as follows:

Well done to all that fished & many thanks to all the parents for their valuable help.

Junior Match 2nd round - 2nd July 201I - Island Lake.

Eight juniors turned out for this round including three new anglers.
The weather was warm & the fish were topping around the lake.
To make things interesting & more challenging, I decided to peg the intermediates in a line with no gaps, pegs 6-10.
On the other side of the lake I pegged the juniors out with a one swim gap.
Right from the start the group fishing tight together were catching fish.
On the near side the juniors were catching roach with few bigger fish being caught.
At the weigh in the intermediates all had double figure weights, brilliant fishing from them all.
On the nearside other than the 1st place weight, the other three were close in weights.
Well done everyone who fished, big thank you to the parents for their help on the day.
